Darjeeling is a tea grown in the vicinity of the city of the same name in the northern mountainous part of India in the Himalayas, harvested and made under certain conditions. The plantations are located at an altitude of 750-2000 meters above sea level, where they cover an area of about 17,500 hectares. Darjeeling is sometimes referred to as "champagne tea". It has traditionally been valued above other black teas, especially in the UK and former British colonies.
When brewed properly, it produces a light beverage with a subtle muscatel, slightly tart taste and floral aroma. These properties are due to the special growing conditions of the tea: cold and humid climate, the high altitude location of the plantations and the peculiarities of the soil. Only 87 out of 144 tea farms are officially certified by the Tea Board of India. Only certified tea farms have the right to sell their products under the brand name "darjeeling".
